According to two people familiar with US intelligence, Russia has purportedly given Iran information that may enable it to attack American aircraft, warships, and other assets in the area. As the US and Israel fire retaliatory salvos at American assets and allies in the Persian Gulf, the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity and were not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter, warned that US intelligence has not discovered that Russia is directing Iran on what to do with the information.

Nevertheless, it is the first sign that Moscow has attempted to intervene in the conflict that Israel and the United States started against Iran a week ago. Russia is among the few nations that have cordial ties with Tehran, which has been isolated for years due to its nuclear program and its backing of proxy organizations in the Middle East, such as the Houthis, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

Reports that Russia was providing Iran with intelligence regarding US targets in the area were played down by the White House. It clearly is not making any difference with respect to the military operations in Iran because we are completely decimating them,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Friday.
