Millions of flights had to be canceled due to a huge snow storm that slammed the US east coast Monday with record-breaking snowfall. According to the National Weather Service, snowfall in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts has been close to 33 inches (83 cm), with Central Park in New York receiving more than 19 inches.

New York has seen “near impossible” travel conditions, a state official said. With New Jersey and Massachusetts suffering the most, almost 600,000 east coast households and businesses lost electricity. In sections of eastern Canada, there were winter storm advisories that extended from North Carolina to northern Maine.

The National Weather Service predicted that the snow will continue to fall throughout Monday, reaching a total of 1 to 2 feet (61 cm) of snow by Tuesday morning in certain places close to the northeast coast. During the storm, the smallest state in America, Rhode Island, seemed to have received the greatest snowfall. According to local media, the snowstorm was actually the worst to ever hit the state.

33 inches of snow fell on Providence, the state capital, shattering the previous record of 28.6 inches established in February 1978 for the single largest blizzard.Candice Hrencecin, a Boston-based meteorologist for the National Weather Service.
