Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine’s friends have urged him to reduce strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure in light of the growing global fuel crisis, but that they will only cease if Russia stops hitting Ukraine first.

The Ukrainian president told journalists in a WhatsApp voice message that by attacking Russia’s energy supply, Ukraine was merely responding in kind. It is unknown whose countries he might have been alluding to. China and India continue to rely significantly on Russian oil, while the EU on Russian gas.

Zelensky’s statements follow a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s energy industry, including the important oil export terminal at Ust-Luga port near St. Petersburg. Zelensky stated in a voice message that certain partners have inquired about ways to lessen our response to Russia’s oil and energy sectors. If Russia is prepared not to target Ukraine’s energy, we will reply by not attacking theirs. In reaction to rising energy prices caused by the war in Iran and Tehran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route, the US has relaxed certain restrictions on Russian oil.
