President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s late-night speech was validated by the Central Electoral Commission. Preliminary findings indicate that the citizens approved the Constitution on March 15, the day of the vote. They saw an occurrence today that is genuinely significant for our nation. Participating in the referendum, Kazakhstani citizens backed the constitutional amendment.

They voted for the future of our nation. We can state with confidence that Kazakhstan has made its historic decision to support the new Constitution based on the findings of the exit poll, which were just made public. Thus, the future of history and the destiny of Kazakhstan were decided by our people through their vote,” Tokayev said.

The President, who started the change, stated in the days leading up to the election that while the current constitution was crucial during the challenging years of Kazakhstan’s independence following the fall of the Soviet Union, the times had changed since then and the nation required a new fundamental document.

The amendment to the constitution reinforces the president’s role. The chairs of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Judicial Council, the National Bank, the National Security Committee, and the Prosecutor General are currently appointed by the president with confirmation from the Senate.
