Three years ago, Ariana Grande pleaded with people not to make comments about her body. In a TikTok video, the pop diva and actress responded to comments about her weight and appearance by saying there were “many different ways to look healthy and beautiful”.

Three years later, the social media conjecture about her physique and health has remained. After “endless, ongoing public scrutiny”, the star’s spokesperson made a statement announcing she “will be taking a step back from visibility” at the end of her current tour.”She looks forward to finishing the tour and concluding it on a high note, both well and cheerfully,” the statement added, “and then taking a much-deserved sabbatical from public-facing work and appearances, which has resulted in unending, continual public scrutiny. It comes after the release of her eighth studio album Petal and the graphic visual for the title tune on Friday.

The song speaks to the pressures of fame, and the video depicts Grande as a starlet who auditions for a group of talent scouts while dressed as various pop star personalities. None are judged good enough. The guys initially tell her that it “couldn’t hurt” to lose weight, among other things, before telling the last persona that they miss “the way you used to be”.
