Following the investigation of a close friend in his Socialist Party for allegedly taking part in a kickback scheme, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pleaded with the country on Thursday for forgiveness.
The devastating lawsuit is the most recent legal controversy that has plagued Sánchez’s family and inner party circle for the past year; none of them have progressed past the preliminary inquiry stage. Sánchez has not been charged with any misconduct. I want to ask the public for forgiveness because the Socialist Party and myself as its general secretary not should have trusted him,” he added, referring to Santos Cerdán, a Socialist politician.
Sánchez repeatedly begged the Spanish public for forgiveness while speaking at the Socialist Party headquarters in Madrid. He also claimed that he had only learnt about Cerdán’s corruption allegations just hours before. Cerdán is arguing for his innocence, according to Sánchez.
Sánchez publicly apologised almost 14 months after he took a five-day break to think about his political future when a court opened an inquiry into his wife, Begoña Gómez, for allegedly selling influence.
The Spanish leader declined to call an early election, as his political rivals have been demanding for months, but he did say on Thursday that he will conduct an external examination of the Socialist Party’s accounts.
