Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, firmly opposing the US plan to take control of Greenland. It is absolutely not necessary for the United States to seize Greenland,” Rasmussen said after the meeting. “We were unable to change the American position. The president clearly wants Greenland, but we made it very clear that this is not in the interest of the kingdom.

Rasmussen called for “respectful” cooperation over the Arctic territory, which is under Danish control. Ahead of the talks, Denmark and Greenland had announced plans to increase their military presence on the island, coordinating with NATO allies to strengthen Arctic defence.

Trump, who has repeatedly described Greenland as strategically important and rich in minerals, said that acquiring the island would make NATO “far more formidable and effective.” In a series of social media posts, he emphasised that the US must secure Greenland to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence, stating that “anything less than that is unacceptable.
