The Federal Government No Longer Funds Free COVID Vaccines

A federal initiative that provided free COVID-19 vaccinations to individuals has come to an end. This implies that those without insurance might be required to pay up to $200 for the potentially life-saving injection.

The updated vaccine for this season is anticipated to be available later this month, and the CDC advises everyone six months of age and older to get it. For children who qualify, COVID vaccinations will still be covered by the federal Vaccines for Children program.

Since COVID caused 2.2% of all deaths in the United States last year, it continues to pose a severe threat to people’s health. Levels are still very high across the country, as evidenced by wastewater surveillance, hospitalisation rates, and ER visits.

The rates of COVID vaccination have fallen precipitously since the pandemic’s early stages. Compared to the nearly 49% of adults who received a flu shot during the previous season, only about 22% of adults have received a COVID vaccination in the last year. Expense-wise, flu shots can run you anywhere from $25 to $90. The COVID and flu vaccines are now seasonal updates that target strains expected to be widely distributed, and the shots’ protective effects diminish with time.
