Vatican News, the Holy See’s news portal, said Monday that Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday at his home in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, had asked for his funeral ceremonies to be “focused on expressing the faith of the Church in the Risen Body of Christ” and be made simpler.

The Roman Pontiff’s burial “seeks to emphasise even more that it is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world,” Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, disclosed.

According to the portal, in April 2024, the late Pope Francis authorised a new copy of the liturgical book for papal burial procedures, which will serve as the guide for the funeral Mass, although it has not yet been declared.

The handling of the Pope’s mortal remains after death is one of the new features included in the second version of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis. According to the report, “his body is immediately placed inside the coffin and the ascertainment of death takes place in the chapel rather than the room where he died.” Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced Pope Francis’s passing from the Casa Santa Marta at 9:45 a.m. on Monday.
