Starting on Saturday, temperatures in Portugal are expected to gradually rise, making it hotter than average for this time of year. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) (source in Portuguese) issued the warning, even hinting at the possibility of a heatwave:

This spell of hot weather will be defined mainly by how long it lasts, with a high probability that it will develop into a heatwave across much of the country,” the IPMA said in a statement. According to the paper, “over a period of six consecutive days, the maximum air temperature is 5 °C above the average value of the daily maximum temperatures” is what constitutes a heatwave.

As a result, temperatures in mainland Portugal are predicted to rise over 30 °C. They may even get close to 38 °C in some places, like Lisbon and the Tagus valley. In parts of Alto Alentejo, Beira Baixa, the Tagus valley, and the eastern Algarve, minimum temperatures will also rise and stay above 20 °C.The statement continues, “The predicted maximum temperatures will be significantly higher than the average for the second half of September, even though they are lower than those recorded during some episodes this summer.”
