On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin received a warm reception as he addressed Russia’s parliament. The “Special Election Operation,” as one Russian publication called last month’s parliamentary elections, produced a State Duma even more pro-Putin than any before it.
The ruling party, United Russia, now has a record number of MPs. This lets the Kremlin pretend it has received a massive mandate from the Russian people. But for what? How will Putin use it? Are there any signs that he intends to suspend what he refers to as the special military operation? Should we prepare for increased escalation in Ukraine and tensions with Europe?
On Thursday, I’ll be waiting to see whether Russia’s leader reveals anything about his plans at an appearance at the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow. Traditionally, the president’s speech at this annual foreign policy event offers insight into Putin’s worldview. Right now, everything leads to Putin continuing Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, despite his country’s massive battlefield casualties and economic damage.
