Russia and Ukraine Accuse One Another of Breaking the Ceasefire When the Easter Truce Falls

Sunday (April 19) saw the collapse of a one-day Easter ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Moscow and Kyiv accusing one another of breaching the agreement with hundreds of strikes. Hopes for a tranquil Christmas were dashed when artillery fire, drone attacks, and frontline clashes characterised the temporary ceasefire, which was scheduled to end at midnight Moscow time.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed to TASS that Putin had not issued an order to extend the truce, saying, “There were no other commands. To Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Moscow conducted 67 attacks between midnight and 8 p.m. local time on Sunday, accusing Russia of just feigning to obey the truce.

“Either the situation demonstrates that Russia has no intention of taking a real step towards ending the war, or Putin does not have complete control over his army,” Zelensky wrote on X. “It’s just about getting good press.

Russia’s Defence Ministry refuted the story, asserting that Ukraine violated the ceasefire over 1,000 times and killed civilians with artillery and drone strikes. It claimed that Ukrainian troops launched over 900 drones, including attacks on Crimea and border areas like Bryansk and Belgorod, and fired 444 rounds against Russian positions. The ministry claimed in a statement that “as a result, there are deaths and injuries among the civilian population, as well as damage to civilian facilities.
