Russian Minister Dismissed by Putin Found Dead

Roman Starovoit, the former Russian transport minister, was discovered dead, reportedly from a gunshot wound he presumably inflicted on himself, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.
President Vladimir Putin sacked him earlier Monday. After Starovoit was fired without explanation, deputy transport minister Andrei Nikitin was named as his successor.

According to the Investigative Committee, it was attempting to determine the incident’s circumstances. Prior to then, Starovoit had been the Kursk region’s governor until May 2024, which was about six years ago.

In August 2024, Ukrainian soldiers launched an unexpected attack and partially captured the area. The Ukrainian army were just recently forced to leave Russia by Moscow, while Kyiv claimed in late June that it still controlled a tiny portion of Russia.

The tenure of Aleksey Smirnov, Starovoit’s successor, was brief. In April, he was taken into custody and charged with embezzling money intended for the construction of fortifications along the Ukrainian border.

In the same case, Starovoit was set to be introduced as a defendant, according to the Russian news agency Kommersant. It’s unknown exactly when Starovoit passed away. Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the State Duma Defence Committee, informed Russian news agency RTVI that he passed away “quite a while ago.
