Even though Christmas seems far off, the job has already started for those who make the holiday magic come to life. Every December custom, whether it’s going to Santa’s workshop, skating on an ice rink, or shopping at the Christmas market, is supported by a group of people who keep everything going well and help the labor market.

Seasonal work openings are therefore increasing as the holiday season draws near. Hiring platform Indeed reports that the number of searches for these roles in 2025 peaked in early October, the greatest since the company’s statistics date back to 2018.

The high level of interest in finding temporary holiday work during what is usually an expensive time of year may be influenced by pressures from the cost of living and limited opportunities across the jobs market generally,” added Jack Kennedy, senior economist at Indeed.

And according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK labor market is still getting softer. For those 16 and older, the UK unemployment rate increased from 4.7% in July to 4.8% in the three months ending August 2025.

According to separate HMRC data, there were 10,000 fewer employees on firm payrolls in September, though analysts have noted that the employment market slowdown is less severe than in previous months.
