According to a Minister, Taiwan is Assured of US Assistance Under Trump

Despite widespread concerns on the island that US President Donald Trump would use Taiwan as a negotiating chip in its negotiations with China, a senior Taiwanese official stated that Taiwan maintains trust in the United States’ backing.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chiu Chui-cheng stated, “Taiwan has cross-party support from the US Congress and the US and Taiwan have a very strong and solid relationship.

Chiu, whose cabinet-level responsibility includes Taiwan’s ties with Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China, stated that “the US and Taiwan have unprecedentedly close relations” in contrast to the US and China.

Chiu asserted that it was too soon to evaluate the effects of the second Trump administration in its entirety. Through an interpreter, he stated, “Since it has been less than three months, the Taiwan government will continue to observe the Trump administration.

“The government of Taiwan has consistently stood up for our freedom, democracy, and sovereignty. When Trump took a congratulatory phone call from then-Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, he made news in Taiwan and broke with a long-standing tradition that US and Taiwanese presidents do not speak directly.
