In order to advance a $100 billion investment pledge for India made by the four-nation European Free Trade Association (EFTA) under a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to Switzerland.
Under the free trade agreement (FTA) that India signed in March with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein in addition to Switzerland, India obtained an investment commitment from EFTA for the next 15 years in exchange for tariff breaks for group members.
Goyal stated at the FICCI National Executive Committee meeting that these investments will come as foreign direct investment (FDI) rather than portfolio investments that should create one million direct jobs. “If this commitment is not met, I reserve the right to withdraw concessions from the FTA.
I’m finding excitement in Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland, which leads me to think that if we are more open about it, we can surpass that. They’ll search for investors and partners in India,” the minister declared.
