One of the main points of contention between red and blue states is cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, which is also causing tensions to rise between local Democratic politicians and President Donald Trump’s administration.

Red and blue states are arguing over whether to join Trump’s mass deportation strategy, while Republicans and Democrats in Congress are at odds about imposing new restrictions on the methods employed by federal immigration officials. Even as more blue states are taking steps to forbid local law enforcement from engaging into formal partnership arrangements with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, red states are now enacting legislation mandating that all local law enforcement agencies do so.

Trump and congressional Republicans are attempting to persuade blue states to follow red-state policies, as they have done on several occasions. Trump has regularly attempted to suspend federal funds for states and communities that do not cooperate fully with his deportation program, but judges have routinely blocked his attempts.

Some congressional Republicans are now stepping up their efforts to penalise cities or so-called sanctuary states that restrict their involvement in immigration enforcement, including by imposing criminal penalties on local officials, as part of the ongoing negotiations over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
