Widespread technology outages have hindered the efforts of anti-government demonstrators facing brutal crackdowns around Iran, and the Trump administration is under pressure to intensify its efforts to protect internet freedom in Iran after cutting funding supporting such activity last year.
The days-long digital blackout, which was implemented in reaction to widespread anti-government demonstrations, may be the worst in Iran’s history, according to experts. In order to conceal proof of its executions and suppression of demonstrators throughout the nation, the Iranian government is accused of shutting off internet connection.
Amid sharp cuts to US foreign aid overall and the elimination of State Department offices dedicated to human rights and democracy-building, the Trump administration curtailed US financing for groups addressing internet freedom issues last year.
Some people have been able to post messages and photos from within the nation despite the blackout thanks to satellite internet providers like Elon Musk’s Starlink. Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has threatened to take action against Iran for killing demonstrators.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, stated on Monday that Trump and Musk had discussed Starlink access in Iran, which provides internet access via ground terminals and a satellite network. However, it’s unclear if they came to a consensus to grant greater access.
