President Donald Trump has stated that he believes the release of hostages in Gaza would begin “very soon” as negotiators for indirect peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas convene in Egypt on Monday.

Hamas is seeking talks on additional matters after agreeing to sections of the 20-point US peace proposal, which included releasing hostages and giving Gaza authority to Palestinian technocrats. The group’s main demands of disarmament and ceasing to participate in Gaza’s administration going forward were not addressed in their response.

Trump responded to reporters’ questions regarding flexibility by saying, “There will always be some changes, but we don’t need flexibility because everybody has pretty much agreed to it. It’s an enormous amount for Israel, it’s a great deal for the entire Arab world, Muslim world, and world, which makes us very happy about it.”

Trump ordered Israel to “immediately stop the bombing” on Friday when Hamas reacted to the suggested plan, but Israeli airstrikes in Gaza persisted. There’s no ceasefire in place at this point in time,” Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian told reporters on Sunday, despite the fact that “certain bombings have actually stopped inside of the Gaza Strip.
