Twenty years after a previous Israeli government closed the settlement of Kadim in the occupied West Bank, a new generation of Israeli settlers has returned. The regional settlers’ council reported that thirty “pioneer families” had travelled from Tel Aviv to the colony on Thursday, riding a surge of Jewish nationalism propelled by Israel’s present government.

They arrived in small groups, some escorted by the IDF, and drove past Palestinian farms and communities with blue and white Israeli flags flying from their vehicles. Some pulled trucks with of furniture, mattresses, and construction supplies.

A 20-year moratorium on Jewish settlements in Jenin has been lifted by the Israeli government. The recent attempt to expand settlements here is being watched with trepidation by Palestinian locals.

According to international law, all Israeli settlements and settler outposts are prohibited. Although they frequently get funds and assistance from the government, outposts are nonetheless prohibited by Israeli legislation. During the opening ceremony, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich used the biblical term for the northern West Bank to say, “We have completed the correction and have returned to the settlement of Kadim, 21 years after the crime of expulsion from northern Samaria.
