There doesn’t seem to be much desire on either side of the ideological divide to prevent the government shutdown that the US is rapidly approaching on Tuesday night. There was no progress at President Donald Trump’s final meeting with congressional Democrats. Both sides have, if anything, been strengthening their positions.
Vice President JD Vance told reporters during the White House meeting, “I think we’re headed to a shutdown because the Democrats won’t do the right thing.”You don’t put a gun to the American people’s head and say, ‘Unless you do exactly what Senate and House Democrats want you to do, we’re going to shut down your government’.
In essence, Republicans want to kick the legislative can a little further down the road by extending existing spending levels for a certain period of time. They are pleased with the current state of affairs, especially because the Trump administration has been cutting expenditure without the assistance of lawmakers who determine the budget.
Additionally, they want a concrete agreement to extend government health insurance subsidies for low-income folks, which Republicans have been hesitant to do thus far. These subsidies expire at the end of the year.
