Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is leading a group of 180 officials to Washington, where he will meet President Donald Trump to highlight their close ties and address ongoing disagreements. Orbán arrived on Thursday, traveling on a flight chartered from Hungary’s budget airline Wizz Air, and spoke of a “gilded age” in US-Hungary relations. The Hungarian delegation is staying at Blair House, just beside the White House.

Before the visit, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said both countries had been working together to create a major economic and energy cooperation package aimed at securing Hungary’s energy future. US officials want Hungary to reduce imports of Russian oil, but the Hungarian government insists that such imports are vital for its national security.

Following recent US sanctions against Russian companies Lukoil and Rosneft, Orbán signaled he would ask President Trump for an exemption. So far, Trump has said he considers Orbán a friend but has not agreed to a waiver. “He’s asked for an exemption, but we haven’t granted one. He is a friend of mine,” Trump said to reporters on Air Force One.
