To debate the future of the conflict in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will meet in Alaska next Friday. Following Trump’s social media announcement of the August 15 meeting, a Kremlin spokeswoman confirmed the date, stating that the venue was “quite logical” considering Alaska’s close proximity to Russia.
Trump has received an invitation to Russia for a possible second summit, the official continued. Immediately, Ukraine did not respond. The summit was announced just hours after Trump hinted that giving up land could be necessary for Ukraine to resolve the conflict, which started when Russia invaded its neighbor in full in February 2022.
A lot of Russians have lost their lives; you’re looking at terrain that has been contested for three and a half years. Trump stated at the White House on Friday, “Many Ukrainians have lost their lives. It is quite complex. There will be some that are swapped and some that are returned. A certain amount of territory sharing will occur, which will benefit both parties.
Regarding the specifics of that idea, the US president did not elaborate. CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, claims that the White House is attempting to persuade European leaders to agree to a deal that would see Russia annex the whole Donbas area in eastern Ukraine and retain Crimea, according to people involved with the talks.
