If a deal has not been struck by June 19, US President Donald Trump has threatened to extend the deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell over U.S. assets of TikTok, the app that 170 million Americans use for short videos.

I would. In an interview recorded on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, and broadcast nationwide on Sunday, Trump stated, “I’d like to see it done,” to the NBC News show “Meet the Press with Kristen Welker. After using the app to help him win over young people in the 2024 presidential election, Trump claimed to have a “sweet spot” for it, saying, “TikTok is – it’s incredibly intriguing. A congressionally required TikTok ban that was originally scheduled to go into effect in January has already been given two reprieves by Trump.

Following Trump’s announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods, a deal that would have spun off TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new company based in the United States and majority-owned and operated by U.S. investors was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it. Democratic senators contend that Trump lacks the legal right to extend the deadline and imply that the proposed agreement would not comply with the law.
