Space may be the answer to one of the most enduring problems in human health, such as knee issues that even Millennials now face.
Using space as a laboratory for regenerative medicine is an intriguing area of medical science that scientists explored at Tuesday’s Abu Dhabi Space Debate.
“I believe we are at a turning point in space development where spaceflight gravity and biotech and pharmaceuticals are coming together in ways that will transform these fields,” stated Mike Gold, Chief Growth Officer at Redwire Space. On the ISS, Redwire produced the first meniscus in space. The BioFabrication facility, or BFF, is what we did with the goal of producing human tissue in space. Additionally, live cardiovascular tissue has been printed on the ISS.
Eventually we will be able to build ‘whole organs’ in the system, and that will transform life on Earth… what is called organ donation. I’ve had friends die while waiting for organs on the list. Now as a world you don’t have to wait for organs, people will easily be able to access these life-giving organs and avoid the anti-rejection reaction from the body. That’s the future.
