Trump Talks with Xi, And the United States and China will Restart Their Trade Negotiations.

In their conversation Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed that further discussions to end the continuing trade war will take place shortly. Trump said that he and Xi had a “terrific” 90-minute conversation that was “almost entirely” about trade. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that the call “resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries.”

He stated that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will represent the United States in the reopened trade negotiations.

At their most recent meeting in Geneva in May, trade officials from the two nations decided to temporarily reduce retaliatory duties on imports from one another’s countries. However, the Trump administration has accused Beijing of dragging its feet on a Geneva agreement to authorise the shipment of more vital minerals to the US, known as rare earths.

According to statements made earlier Thursday by China’s embassy in the United States and Beijing’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trump had asked for the call with Xi. According to reports, Trump has been keen to talk to Xi as the two nations’ already tense trade ties have deteriorated over the last week.
