The president of Ukraine intends to use the NATO gathering in Turkey to press Kyiv’s allies to provide the air defense systems it desperately needs to defend itself against intensifying Russian assaults.
More than fifty citizens were killed when Russian missiles crashed into apartment buildings in the Ukrainian capital twice in less than a week, making Volodymyr Zelensky’s appeal for assistance even more urgent.
Zelensky will also get the opportunity to meet with Donald Trump at the summit in Ankara and make his case that Vladimir Putin should be coerced into negotiations for a “dignified” peace and that Russia’s “brutal” strikes are an act of weakness rather than strength.
The most recent attacks on Ukraine coincide with the country intensifying its own long-range drone operations against Russia, striking military targets and oil facilities there, resulting in severe fuel shortages and power outages. Videos of individuals fighting over the limited amount of gasoline they are permitted to purchase and standing in line for hours may be found on Russian social media accounts. Zelensky expressed optimism that the NATO summit in Turkey will not be “empty” on the eve of the event.
