The chairman of Air India stated that one of the engines of the aircraft that went down last week was brand-new, while the other wasn’t scheduled for maintenance until December. According to N Chandrasekaran, who an Indian TV station interviewed, the aircraft’s two engines had “clean” histories.

“A new engine installed in March 2025 was the correct engine. “The left engine is scheduled for its next maintenance check in December 2025, having last been serviced in 2023,” he told the Times Now program.

Last Thursday, less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad airport in western India, AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed for London, crashed, killing at least 270 people, the majority of whom were passengers.

Investigators also search through wreckage and decode recorded flight data and cockpit audio from the aircraft’s recovered black boxes in order to piece together the last minutes of the flight and identify what caused the disaster.

“There are several hypotheses and possibilities. As far as I’m aware, however, this particular aircraft, this particular tail, AI171, had a spotless record,” Mr. Chandrasekaran stated, warning against making snap judgements.

The specialists have assured me that the black box and the recorders would undoubtedly reveal the narrative. Our only option is to wait for that,” he continued.
