A Russian missile and drone attack killed at least 18 people throughout Ukraine overnight, including two children, in one of Moscow’s biggest assaults in recent months. Regional officials said an eight-year-old kid and a woman recovered from the rubble of an apartment tower were among 12 people killed in Dnipro. Six individuals were slain in the capital Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said civilian infrastructure and energy facilities had been targeted across the country and more than 100 people injured. The Russian military ministry said the strikes were in retaliation to prior Ukrainian attacks. In a statement it stated all the “strike objectives” had been met.

The Kremlin claimed Tuesday it was carrying out the “systematic strikes” it had promised after blaming Kyiv of a deadly attack on a student dormitory in an occupied portion of eastern Ukraine in late May.

Kyiv announced it had struck a Russian military force.Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday the missiles targeted Ukrainian military facilities and said “this practice will be continued.” In his evening video message on Monday, Zelensky had warned that a “massive strike” was conceivable and told citizens to pay careful heed to air raid sirens.
