According to the US African Command (Africom), two US service members have vanished while participating in military drills in Morocco. They were last observed on Saturday, according to officials, close to ocean cliffs near the Cap Draa Training Area, which is near the Moroccan city of Tan Tan.
According to preliminary assessments, the missing soldiers may have fallen into the ocean while taking part in the yearly joint training exercise known as African Lion 2026, a US defense official told the BBC.
According to Africom, a search-and-rescue effort for the service members is underway, involving ground, aviation, and naval resources from the US, Morocco, and other nations. In a statement issued on Sunday, Africom said the search is ongoing and the event is under investigation. Our attention is on the affected service members and their families.
According to a US official who spoke to the BBC, authorities think the incident was an accident rather than a kidnapping or act of terrorism. According to the official, US and Moroccan forces began a search when the soldiers failed to return to the training location and were reported missing. Every year, the US military, NATO partners, and African countries participate in a combined exercise called African Lion to improve operations.
