If a truce ends the more than three-year conflict, Zelenskyy was in London for discussions with two dozen European leaders who promised military assistance to protect his nation from future Russian attack.
The purpose of the meeting, which British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted, was to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and to give new impetus to previous actions, including a fresh round of UN and EU sanctions targeting Russia’s key oil and gas export revenues.
The discussions also covered measures to strengthen Ukrainian air defences, provide Kyiv with longer-range missiles that can strike deep inside Russia, and help defend Ukraine’s power grid from Russia’s nearly daily drone and missile attacks as winter draws near.
While US President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of sending Tomahawk missiles, Zelenskyy has pushed the US to do so. Trump imposing oil sanctions this week was “a big step,” according to the Ukrainian leader, who also stated that pressure must be applied to all Russian oil businesses, not only Rosneft and Lukoil.
At a press conference held at the Foreign Office in London, he added, “In addition, we are implementing our own pressure campaign using drones and missiles that are specifically targeted at the Russian oil sector.
