On Friday, Ukraine and the EU launched a €100 million fund to build on Ukraine’s proven accomplishments in the battlefield and accelerate defence innovation. EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov introduced the BraveTech EU project during the fourth annual Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) in Rome.

Each partner is expected to contribute €50 million to BraveTech EU, the first significant tech partnership between Ukraine and Europe on equal terms. Small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups in Ukraine and Europe will be the initiative’s primary emphasis.

“Results from the battlefield will be shared with European colleagues,” Fedorov stated during a press conference in Rome. The effort may potentially be funded by other European nations, he said. The EU and its member countries have an industrial capability that can help Ukraine create new defence systems and increase European resilience,” Kubilius stated in a statement.

According to a message on Fedorov’s Telegram profile, the initiative will be implemented in two stages, beginning in the autumn with hackathons for Ukrainian and European military businesses. The goal is to grow the program in 2026 by investing in the most promising ventures and awarding greater awards.
