Spain’s State Meteorological Agency has issued a special warning for “very heavy and persistent” showers and thunderstorms in the Levante region of Spain and areas of the Balearic Islands. The warning will be in effect from this Sunday and will last 48 hours.
Aemet’s information note acknowledges the potential for the precipitation to become “torrential,” but it also notes that it is challenging to determine the precise location in these regions where the highest totals will be recorded.
Currently, the agency is issuing red alerts exclusively along the southern Valencian coast and in the northern region of Alicante. In addition to the aforementioned Mediterranean regions, orange alerts are in effect in the Seville lowlands, Ronda, and the Sierra de Grazalema in the province of Cádiz.
The combination of the isolated DANA Adam, cut off from the general atmospheric circulation, and a very humid easterly flow will bring widespread rainfall to four provinces (southern Valencia, Alicante, the Region of Murcia, and the Almería coastline) and up to three of the Balearic Islands. The Pityusic Islands (Ibiza and Formentera) will be particularly affected, but Mallorca will also receive significant amounts.
