Seven additional Indian languages have been added to Google Translate by the massive tech company. New Indian languages added are Awadhi, Bodo, Khasi, Kokborok, Marwadi, Santali, and Tulu.

In addition, Google announced the “largest expansion” of Google Translate by adding support for 103 additional international languages. As a result, Google Translate is now available in 243 languages.

With over 614 million speakers, these new languages—from Cantonese to Qʼeqchiʼ—offer translation services for about 8% of the global population. According to a Google blog post, Awadhi, Bodo, Khasi, Kokborok, Marwadi, Santali, and Tulu are among the seven new Indian languages on the list.

The business claimed that to introduce the new features to its translation service, it made use of its in-house large language model (LLM), PaLM 2.

Google stated, “PaLM 2 was a crucial component in enabling Translate to learn closely related languages more effectively, such as languages similar to Hindi, like Awadhi and Marwadi, and French creoles, like Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole.

For those unaware, PaLM 2 is Google’s language learning machine (LLM) that supports multiple languages, reasoning, and coding, and is driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The Gemini Pro LLM, which powers the tech major’s generative AI chatbots Bard and Gemini, distinguishes PaLM 2 LLM from it.
