According to recent analysis, the economy loses billions of pounds annually because people choose to work through illness rather than take a day off.

The report estimates that about £25 billion of this is attributable to lost productivity from people who choose to work through illness rather than take time off, with the remaining amount coming from sick days taken. The UK is referred to as “the (literal) sick man of Europe” by the IPPR due to its low investment rate, smoking, excessive consumption of unhealthy food, bad jobs, and poor public health. It warned that rising illness rates will cause people to live longer in poor health and present a “serious fiscal threat.

According to the Independent, this could result from unfavourable workplace cultures, subpar management, unstable finances, or a lack of awareness of long-term conditions among UK employers. Our illustration of the “hidden” productivity costs associated with working through illness ought to spark a shift in strategy.
