In a belligerent speech to the country on the day of its independence, President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Ukraine will fight for its independence “while its calls for peace are not heard,”

He declared, “We need a just peace, a peace where our future will be decided only by us,” and added that Ukraine was “a fighter, not a victim.” He went on to say: “Ukraine has not yet won, but it has certainly not lost.”

Zelensky’s comments followed Moscow’s announcement that Ukraine had targeted Russian energy and power installations overnight, accusing drone attacks of causing a nuclear power plant fire in the Kursk region in the west.

According to reports, the fire was purportedly started by a drone being shot down, according to the Ukraine government’s Centre for Countering Disinformation.

Russia’s accusations that Ukraine “allegedly carried out targeted strikes” on the power plant “are typical methods” of Russian propaganda, the center said, accusing Russia of “spreading manipulations.”

The plant’s press staff posted on the Telegram messaging app that the fire was swiftly put out and that no one was hurt. It stated that although radiation levels were under acceptable limits, the attack had damaged a transformer.
