Trump Moves to Block Two Iberdrola Offshore Wind Projects Near Massachusetts Coast

US President Donald Trump is moving to revoke contracts for two major offshore wind farms owned by Spain’s Iberdrola off the coast of Massachusetts, according to court filings released Wednesday.

The Justice Department said it plans to cancel the federal licence granted in 2024 by the Biden administration to Avangrid, Iberdrola’s US subsidiary, for the construction and operation of the New England 1 and 2 projects. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has been instructed to withdraw the licence by October 10, marking another step in Trump’s pushback against renewable energy. Iberdrola had previously announced a $4 billion capital increase for Avangrid to fund its expansion in the US, with offshore wind seen as a key part of its strategy.

Trump has long argued that America should rely on its oil reserves and, more recently, has floated the idea of building new nuclear power plants to supply energy for the growing tech sector. He has also frequently criticised wind energy, claiming turbines kill birds a point dismissed by environmental groups, who stress that wind remains far less harmful than fossil fuels like coal and oil.
