The US’s decision to give preference to white Afrikaners’ refugee applications has drawn criticism from the South African government, which maintains that there is no solid evidence of a white genocide.
It brought attention to an open letter that was released earlier this week by well-known Afrikaners, who rejected the storyline and called the relocation plan racist. It further stated that the small number of white South African Afrikaners who volunteered to immigrate to the US was proof that they were not facing persecution.
US President Donald Trump’s administration stated Thursday that it would reduce the annual ceiling on refugees to 7,500, the lowest number ever. There are no precise numbers on how many white South Africans were accepted under the US program.
According to South Africa’s most recent crime data, white people have not been more victims of violent crime than individuals of other races. Afrikaners, who are primarily descended from Dutch and French settlers, were granted refugee status by President Trump earlier this year after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa passed legislation permitting the government to take land without paying compensation in some exceptional circumstances.
