In recent years, Europe has experienced more intense heatwaves; in recent months, there have been several extreme heat-related events, such as droughts and wildfires in Spain, France, Italy, and other places. However, there has been an additional effect in other regions of Europe, where important rivers like the Rhine and the Danube have dropped to record-breakingly low levels.

Cargo transportation may become much more challenging as a result, possibly requiring ships to transport lighter loads, bringing commercial shipping on some of these routes to a near standstill, or forcing operators to use more labor-intensive alternatives.

Thus, major European industries like chemicals and oil refining might be severely disrupted. The inability of cargo ships to transport full loads is one of the primary ways that low water levels impact European industries. Instead, operators have to transfer some freight to rail or road or divide it among multiple vessels.

At Kaub on the Rhine, the crucial measurement point fell below the crucial threshold of thirty centimeters. According to ICIS, it was measured at 27 centimeters in late July of this year and was predicted to continue declining. The reading is for the Kaub gauge, not the overall depth of the river or the depth of a navigable channel.
