Ethiopia welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday for a two-day tour of the east African nation. The two spoke with Indian community members in Addis Ababa after meeting his Ethiopian colleague, Abiy Ahmed.

A traditional Indian dance performance and long lines of people chanting Modi’s name and waving Indian flags welcomed him. Additionally, local Ethiopian musicians performed a Hindi song at his home. New Delhi sees Ethiopia as a crucial geostrategic and economic ally in Africa, where India aims to increase its power amid rivalry with China.

Ethiopia provides a useful base for Indian officials; it is home to the headquarters of the African Union, and its 2024 membership in the expanded BRICS group has given it more political and economic clout.

India has a long history in Ethiopia, which is seen as a market that is recovering economically. There are more than 175 Indian businesses, mostly in the textile sector. Indian aspirations have switched to the strategic mining industry after early investments in agriculture were hampered by operational and financial limitations.
