On Tuesday, German police conducted widespread raids against a trafficking organization that was allegedly utilizing the residency certificates of Syrian refugees fraudulently to allow fellow citizens to enter Germany.
According to the federal police office in Halle a der Saale, over 1,000 policemen were sent to search over 50 homes and businesses in and around Leipzig, a city in the east. According to police, the ring used legitimate residency credentials that were given to Syrian refugees in Germany and delivered to Syrians who looked similar.
A lesser number of persons targeted in the raids were accused of permitting “unauthorised entry” into Germany, while the majority were suspected of allowing their documents to be used in the scam.
Additionally, “violations of narcotics and explosives laws” were found, and according to the police, there were hints that some of the suspects had ties to organized crime. Formal identification procedures were performed on forty-four suspects.
Document and visa advisors” from the German police stationed at different airports in the Middle East were responsible for identifying many of the suspected fraud instances. Since 2024, the German federal police have sent 71 of these consultants outside the EU to assist the visa departments of German embassies and consulates, as well as airlines at key international airports.
