According to a tech expert in contact with Iranian Starlink users, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is currently offering free internet connection via its Starlink satellite service to subscribers in Iran while the country’s authorities maintains its brutal crackdown on anti-government protests.

According to Ahmad Ahmadian, executive director of the technology NGO Holistic Resilience, Starlink accounts in Iran that were previously inactive now have connections and their membership payments have been waived as of Tuesday.

Ahmadian told CNN that because of the extent of the communication embargo, Starlink has occasionally been “the only way to get the information out” to the world about the protestors’ deaths. Starlink, a vital component of US soft power in closed societies or conflict zones such as Ukraine, comprises thousands of low-orbit satellites that connect to ground equipment worldwide.

While asserting that all options for US assistance for the demonstrators, including military action, are open, Trump has instructed the demonstrators to continue opposing the Iranian government.Experts claim that the Iranian government is expanding on decades of expertise in monitoring its citizens and exporting such surveillance to other nations, such as Syria. According to Ahmadian, Iranian officials are currently employing several strategies to obstruct or weaken Starlink signals within Iran. He noted that some of that is “military-grade” jamming, akin to what Russia has done to Starlink terminals on the front lines in Ukraine.
