At least 21 people have been killed and dozens more injured after an Iryo high-speed train carrying around 300 passengers derailed in the town of Adamuz and collided with an AVE train operating on the Madrid–Huelva route.
According to Spanish rail infrastructure operator ADIF, all train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended until further notice. Emergency services remain at the scene as authorities assess the scale of the damage and work to assist those affected.
Passengers trapped inside the carriages shared images and messages on social media, describing moments of panic after the impact. One witness said the collision felt like an earthquake. Several passengers were forced to break windows to escape, suffering cuts and other injuries in the process.
Salvador Jiménez, a journalist with Spanish public broadcaster RTVE who was travelling on the Malaga–Madrid service, said the final two carriages derailed, with one completely overturning. We left Malaga on time at 6:40pm bound for Madrid. I was in the first carriage. Suddenly, it felt like an earthquake and the train derailed,” Jiménez said. He added that passengers with medical training were quickly identified to provide first aid, while hammers were used to break windows to allow evacuation.
