In his speech at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Europe “should not hesitate to deploy” the resources at its disposal to safeguard its interests amid diplomatic fallout from leaked private communications and growing trade threats from Donald Trump in the lead-up to the US president’s own eagerly awaited speech.

Wearing aviator glasses, the French president criticized the US competition, claiming it seeks to “subordinate Europe” in front of an excited crowd. In a forceful speech to the continent, he emphasized that “Europe clearly has to fix its key issues,” advocating for increased innovation and private investment in critical areas. Macron did not entirely avoid the topic, even though he did not speak directly to Trump.

“It’s time of peace, stability and predictablilty,” he said at the beginning of his speech, to much laughter. However, we have gotten close to “instability and imbalance,” Macron continued, adding that “conflict has become normalized. Then came the subtle jab at Trump: the French president stated, “I hear some of them have been settled,” while pointing out that there were other battles in 2025.

Towards the end of his otherwise economy-focused speech, Obama returned to the subject. “It’s not a time for new imperialism or new colonialism,” Macron stated. “We must work together to address these three global issues for our fellow citizens.
