Famous climber Alex Honnold made a perilous attempt to ascend one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers for ninety-two minutes on a sunny Sunday morning in Taipei, while people all around the world were glued to their screens.
At 10:43 a.m. local time, he scaled the final inch of the metal spire atop Taipei 101 and stood on the 1,667-foot (508-meter) summit, grinning and waving to the enthusiastic spectators below. This event will surely go down in climbing legend.
He is the first climber known to have free soloed Taipei 101, which is an ascent done with just his bare hands and a chalk bag for traction instead of ropes, safety nets, or any other equipment. Honnold, 40, has been well-known in the climbing world for about 20 years. He gained notoriety in his early 20s for his successful free solo ascents of difficult routes.
However, after becoming the first person to free-climb El Capitan, a vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park, in 2017, he became well-known worldwide. The thrilling ascent was documented in the critically acclaimed documentary “Free Solo.
