Even if hundreds of firemen are still deployed in Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo to combat the worst forest fire in Spain’s history, it is still too early to determine the exact amount of money that this year’s fires will cost the country’s public finances. However, when the estimates for 2025 are taken into consideration, it is quite evident that the bill will be quite high.

It is estimated that the Spanish government allocated between 3,548 and 6,741 million euros to extinguishing fires that, according to data (source in Spanish) from the Interior Ministry, devastated nearly 354,793 hectares across the country in a total of 8,189 recorded incidents. This information was derived from the report “Major forest fires,” compiled by Greenpeace. The report was based on data obtained from the National Association of Forestry Companies (Asemfo).

The computation differs depending on whether the benchmark is the anticipated cost per hectare used by the Navarra Forestry Agency, which is set at 10,000 euros, or the statistics used by Asemfo, which placed the cost at about 19,000 euros per hectare. Both of these data are utilized to determine the cost. In any case, these estimates only reflect the typical cost of firefighting efforts; they do not take into consideration the expense of restoring the areas that were damaged by the fire.
