People in Italy are becoming increasingly angry that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will be assisting with US security operations at the Winter Olympics next month. US authorities insist this has happened at past Olympics.

After two deadly shootings during Trump’s ongoing immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, current and past politicians asked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to step in and stop them from being there.

After the agency in the US started using more aggressive techniques, former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told the country’s government to “set our own limits” and “make clear decisions. After violence and murder on the streets in the US… “We can’t let this happen,” Conte wrote on X on Tuesday. “Stop bowing,” he said.

Washington officials and US diplomats in Rome worked to make clear what ICE agents would be doing at the Games. A representative from the US Department of Homeland Security told CNN on Tuesday that ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations, which is a section of the agency, will have “a security role” at the Olympics. The spokesperson went on to say, “They don’t do immigration enforcement (operations) in a foreign country, obviously.
