French President Emmanuel Macron, on a visit to Japan on Wednesday, seemed to take a swipe at US President Donald Trump by praising Europe’s “predictability” and comparing it to countries that “could hurt you without even informing you.”

Macron criticized countries that claimed to be “going much faster” than their allies, but “you don’t know whether the day after tomorrow they will still be in that position, and whether tomorrow they won’t make a decision that could hurt you without even informing you.” His criticism was aimed at the United States. The comment alluded to the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran, which has effectively blocked the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway through which Japan typically receives a sizable portion of its oil imports.

Trump’s criticism of France for not allowing planes carrying military supplies for the battle to pass over its territory had surprised Macron’s team.France has maintained its position since “day one” of the war, according to Macron, who made the statement in an interview with Japanese television NHK. He added that France has not been involved in the military offensive started by the US and Israel and has not been consulted about it.
