The capital of North Darfur, el-Fasher, has been under siege by the independent military force of Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and affiliated armed groups for several months. This would probably start another wave of killings if the city fell. This is taking place completely in the absence of any international, regional, or UN presence that is required to safeguard the local civilian population.

More than half a million people, mostly Massalit, have already been forced to flee into neighbouring Chad by the thousands of Massalit people that RSF forces and affiliated armed groups have already killed in el-Geneina, West Darfur, and the surrounding areas. Now, there’s a chance that they could target the hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals who are escaping violence elsewhere.

My interpreter and I were strolling through the parched surroundings of Adré, a small town in eastern Chad, on a scorching July day. The town was home to hundreds of thousands of people, primarily ethnic Massalit women and children who had fled the violence in West Darfur. There was a conspicuous lack of men. Families were residing in improvised shelters made of four sticks and a piece of tarp, which did little to shield them from the intense heat or downpour of rain. There was very little access to running water, electricity, or consistent food supplies.
