After being predicted by Canadian media to win at least two seats in Monday’s by-elections, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has solidified its hold on power with a slender majority in the House of Commons.
The electoral victories follow five opposition members of parliament defecting to the Liberals, and they occur a year after Carney assumed office. With 173 of the 343 House seats presently held by liberals, Carney would have more freedom to pursue his political goals. The outcome of the third special election is yet unknown.
He might delay a federal election until 2029 and his party will be able to enact laws without the help of opposition benches. Liberal victories are predicted by CBC, CTV, and the Globe and Mail in two ridings, or constituencies, in the Toronto area: University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest.
Following the appointment of former Liberal Defence Minister Bill Blair as Canada’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and the appointment of Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau’s deputy prime minister, as an adviser to Ukraine, the seats in Toronto became empty.
